Rafting down the NILE

I thought I would also post quickly about our trip a couple weekends ago to Jinja where we rafted down the Nile River on class 5 rapids! Everyone told me that it would be scary, and Ruco and I debated back and forth about going. I finally gave in (actually Ruco just booked the trip in my absence,) and the two of us took off for a weekend. We received great training about what to do if the boat turns over, if you are trapped under the boat, etc. Our guide told us that if you get drug under with the rapids--don't panic! You have enough air in your lungs to sustain you for quite a while. Well, our boat didn't over turn much...but when it did, it was on the worst rapid. We actually had the option not to do it, but because I had been having so much fun prior to this, I decided to brave it. Ruco was really surprised! Anyway, we really got stuck in a whirlpool and then our boat overturned. I was OK the first time I was drug under water for probably only 10 seconds even though it was scary...but when I came up again, I didn't have enough time to get a good breath of air before I was drug under water again by the current. I panicked! It was definitely scary! I finally came back up and caught eye contact with Ruco. I know I must have looked like a nut flailing about, but he reassured me that I had indeed survived! HA! It was scary, but fun. I believe Ruco's brother Hugo did it when he came to Uganda a couple of years ago. We don't have any photos unfortunately because our camera would have been ruined had we brought it along, but I thought I would share with everyone my near death experience! :) We did have a fun time though, and met some fun friends on our boat!

Woah, I am impressed...not something I would have thought you would ever do!! And those rapids in the picture look VERY scary...

I am sorry to say but I laughed picturing you flailing around and I can SEE the look on your face, I really can, and that look...makes me laugh =)

I got your postcard and it was too sweet =) I miss you too and am sorry I am really bad at keeping in touch =( I pray for you two often and when everyone talks about how much our ecomomy is struggling and how they have to "cut back" I always think, "My friend lives in a mud hut in Africa" I think we'll be okay =)

Good grief Tori!! Is this the same girl who drove around Pensacola looking for the "doc in the box" with Ginger?!! You are infinitely braver than me! I've been catching up your blog lately and think about you often. Ruco, it's a pleasure to see such great pictures or your time in Uganda. Be safe! Praying for you...

Oh my gosh! I am so glad that it was just a near-death experience! I would have been a little scared too, but Ruco would not have let you drown! You are such a brave girl! This story kind of reminds me of when we went canoeing with my family up in the mountains...do you remember that? And everytime we got close to the trees with the spiders we'd jump out of the boat! Oh good times! I just miss you!
