So we have been in Moroto for a week and a half now. It hasn't been an easy week necessarily, but we are getting there. Ruco has been incredibly busy with the food distributions. At first, he was getting home close to 8pm every night from the field. :( The UN World Food Program (WFP) has reformatted the way they would like for food to be distributed in Karamoja, and because of those changes, things have been moving slowly.
Despite those initial crazy days though, Ruco says the food distribution went great yesterday..and that he was actually home at 5! I think things are getting better...Ruco will get the swing of things, and we will both start feeling at home in Moroto.
Lately however, I have been shocked by the need in Karamoja. I mean, we have lived in Africa for the last year on and off, but things have never been so "in my face" as they are here. During a distribution last week, I went with Ruco to the field and was shocked by the state of the children and one baby in particular because of mal-nutrition. My heart breaks, and I only pray over the next year that we don't lose our conviction to help whomever God places in our path, even though the need is so overwhelming.
When I wasn't in the field with Ruco last week, I spent my days house hunting. Basically, I ride around on a motorcycle (boda boda,) and stop at any house that looks nice. Then, we go inside and just ask to rent the place. There's no newspaper or "craigs list." You just pull right up and say "hey, can I have your house??" It's been interesting to say the least. I think we have finally found a place that will work for us..its nice and quiet...and there is plenty of room for Ruco to have a garden, which is at the top of his priority list.
Please pray for us that we do indeed find a house..and pray for Ruco...that God would give him strength for the long days! We miss you all greatly and are also praying for you!!

Hi there -- I get Google alerts for Samaritans Purse, and found your blog through that. Pretty amazing -- considering my fiance and I are in the process of sending in our apps to work with SP, we met in Africa, and want to go back after a year of marriage. I'd love to hear more of your story!

I am so glad Ruco is getting into the swing of things and getting to come home at a descent hour! I definitely know how that is, what with Rhett coaching! Sooo, the house hunting sounds interesting! You ride on a motorcycle? Do you know how to drive one?! How cool! That is so neat that you just go up and ask "are you renting"! I hope you and Ruco find the perfect house!! And I hope Ruco gets to make the best garden ever! =)
Ejoka!?
Hey, I thought I would leave another comment. My heart goes out to you guys! We've quite literally been there. It gets better, just make sure you guys have a place where you can safeguard "your time" otherwise it is "in your face" All. the. Time. Sun up- sun down.
We have many friends in Kaabong living where we lived less than a year ago, and know some missionaries living in Nakapiripirit and some who were posted in Moroto and are due to swing back in. Networking can help a lot. If you want contacts let me know.
In Christ,
Nakiru (Georgia) :)
